Hi, my name is CALLIE. I was picked up as a stray, and am horribly emaciated. The shelter said I am about nine months old, but I'm a bit older than that!
I'll let my vet/foster mom tell you more. You know us princesses need our beauty sleep!
CALLIE (and future family)
NOTE: Since CALLIE was a stray, the breed of the father is unknown.
Based on x-rays and full dental exam, I estimate her age to be about two and a half years old. The bones and teeth are fully mature. The tartar on the teeth also is too mature for a nine month old dog.
The x-rays show close to a dozen fetal skeletons. They overlap on the x-rays so it's impossible to know an exact count until birth. She is heartworm, E.canis, Lyme Disease, and Anaplasmosis NEGATIVE ---- YEAH!!!!! We'll start heartworm prevention tomorrow.
The blood panel revealed normal enzyme and electrolyte levels. The red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit are below normal range. I am beginning supplementation to help build healthy red blood cells and raise these counts. Because of the low red blood cell count, I'm going to perform coagulation tests tomorrow as "just in case" measures. I'd rather know ahead of time (whelping, c-section, etc.) if there might be a clotting problem. I will let you know if there's a potential problem. I don't suspect there to be one. She clotted fine after the blood was drawn for today's tests.
She's a typical setter... ears infected... yeast... I'm treating this, too. She's a very sweet, laid back girl so far with my crew. Not particularly interested in the cats other than to give them an occasional sniff if they come up next to her. Doesn't chase them if they run. Did get startled last night when one went flashing by her in the hallway and through a doorway... she had to go investigate what had zipped past her.
The chihuahuas don't intimidate her, nor do they appear to be toys. They are just part of the world. CALLIE & MUNCHKIN (5 1/2 pound Chihuahua -- boss of the house) sniffed each other, MUNCH barked at CALLIE, and they sniffed some more. That's a pretty major accomplishment in my house. Everyone (animal-wise) gets at least a menacing growl +/-snapping from MUNCH before being considered for acceptance.
She's revealed a few "talents" since getting to my house and clinic. She's a great counter-surfer. Got a great nose for food of all kinds or snack possibilities (i.e., kitty fudgies). She loves to untrash whatever I put in a trash can... even if the lid is closed tight. Pulled the lid off the large plastic can at the clinic today. Not sure if the laughing our staff members were doing was for the successfulness of her task, or because they weren't looking forward to cleaning up after her.
She's won the hearts of all the staff members. Despite the extra that she's carrying at the moment, she's very adept at getting on beds, couch, etc. One can't help but love her. All she wants is to be loved, touched, hugged, etc. Fostered by Sharon in GA.
