It's hard to believe that this kind of thing is tolerated by the Tribal Elders. Many of us are under the impression that American Indians believe that animals have souls and that all creatures should be treated well. I know many tribes that do take good care of their animals. Unfortunately, not all do, and we are currently researching what can be done to correct this problem.
"I just got a call from [name omitted] and she wanted to know if we did ES rescue. There is a very sweet small ES female at the shelter on the [name omitted] Indian reservation. She said that when the ACO there has had enough of the dogs he takes them out and shoots them then hauls the carcasses to the landfill. She is full at her shelter or she would take the girl. She does have her on a waiting list with ACES, but they are full to the brim I guess. [Name omitted] told the ACO not to kill this dog, that she would find someone. I told her to get the dog pulled and I would foster her. I couldn't bear to think of what the alternative for her would be. [Name omitted] said if the girl is still alive she will pull her and vet her and then get her to me. The thing is, this guy at the reservation shelter is a ticking time bomb, and even if he knows to hold a dog for [name omitted], sometimes he just shoots them anyway. She called me first to see if we could foster her, and then was going to call the officer and if she is still alive, is going to pull her."
"The English girl was pulled out yesterday (Monday, October 10, 2005) from Hell. [Name omitted] said they had to clean out kennels just to get to her. The dogs hadn't been fed since Thursday. A couple of dogs were eating a Momma cat. The guy just shuts the cats in the building loose, and if they get in a pen with dogs, they die and are a meal. [Name omitted] and others have tried everything they can to shut the place down, but it is on tribal land, run by the tribal police, and "inspected" by - you guessed it - the Tribe! Most likely she is heartworm +. We will know this morning. If she is, and is very bad, [name omitted] said they usually opt to euthanize as they don't have the funds or space/ time to treat heartworm. She will call and let us know. I said it is up to you. It may be kindest to euthanize if she is in very bad shape. At least she would get a couple of days of love, peace, and a full tummy. And a needle is so much kinder than a gun."

This English Setter girl is a beautiful lady. She is small, weighing about 40 pounds and standing approximately 20 inches at the shoulder. Evidently, she had a good life at one time as she is housebroken and will go to the door to tell you she needs to go outside. She hasn't quite mastered the dog door on her own yet, but is learning. She is well-mannered and very playful, loving to run and fetch stuffed toys, ropes, or tennis balls. She does cling close though to people she once she trusts them, and enjoys sitting on the couch touching her human, and she sleeps in bed with us all night. I think after her experience at the above-mentioned "shelter", she is very insecure and nervous. She is coming out of her shell, though, and eats well and sleeps through the night. She has a very nice coat, and with proper care it will only get better. She is afraid of raised voices and loud noises, and trembles when frightened by them. She does not show any fear aggression whatsoever. She is good with other dogs and with cats. The family who opens their hearts and home to this lovely little girl will undoutedly be blessed by loving and being loved by this sweet furkid!! Fostered by Becky.
